Graduation is not the only thing coming in May.

The University of Houston-Victoria president's office invited U.S. Rep. Ron Paul to be part of the graduation commencement ceremonies on May 10.

Paul is not only a congressman, but he is also a medical doctor who has delivered more than 4,000 babies.

Paul has served in Congress for more than 30 years and surprisingly has served in the medical field for more than 15 years. He was a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he moved his focus to Washington. He was a strong advocate for sound monetary policy. After 20 years in Congress, he voluntarily relinquished his U.S. House seat and returned to his medical practice as a specialist in obstetrics/gynecology.

Ofelia Guerra, a senior at UHV, said, "He has accomplished many things throughout the years. He is a man of respect."

"He has done a lot for lowering taxes," said Victoria business owner David Pohl.

However, not everyone is totally excited about the guest choice. Some students are more focused on the political side of Paul, which is probably because of the current election campaign.

"It seems that there is not equal representation," said Kelli Gill, a graduating UHV senior.

Gill is an active member in the UHV student senate and was part of Barak Obama's recent campaign in Victoria. She really enjoyed what water conservationist Andre Cordrescu had to say at one of the past ceremonies.

"He was an encouraging and enlightening speaker," Gill said.

Whether the graduates are excited or not about Paul speaking at the Spring 2008 graduation, it probably doesn't matter either way to them as long as they receive their long awaited diplomas.
