On Fiesta Day, two University of Houston-Victoria organizations showed a film to promote their organizations' missions.

The two organizations are the Rosebud Film Society and the Mexican American Student Organization. Rosebud's mission is to stimulate critical thinking and discussion through film and MASO's mission is to promote and preserve Mexican American culture.

"When the two missions are fused, the result is the upcoming Fiesta Day film showing event," said MASO member Alma Alvarado.

The event was 6 p.m. May 1 at Las Palmas Mexican Cafe, located at 6007 North Main in Victoria, according to Alvarado.

According to MASO member Rosa Muzquiz, MASO obtained a special license to provide a screening off-campus, which is limited to UHV students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Salome Chavarria, UHV Spanish professor, was invited to be guest speaker and choose a film. Muzquiz said Chavarria chose the 2002 film "Frida," starring Salma Hayek.

"I chose Frida because I admired her courage for life in spite of her physical impairment. She still had courage to live and enjoy life, which can be seen in her art. Her life is an example to be followed," Chavarria said.

Muzquiz said the event provides an opportunity for UHV students, faculty, staff, and alumni to get together in a casual setting and learn about Hispanic culture. It was also important to have an authentic ethnic environment, such as the one at Las Palmas.

"One of MASO's goals is to engage the UHV community in supporting Latin American advancement through increased exposure to ethnic culture," Muzquiz said.

Julio Muzquiz, MASO president, said, "A Mexican restaurant seemed ideal. Plus, we had a positive experience previously with Las Palmas when we collaborated for our 1st Annual Honorary Member Award."
